The American Southwest from the air 2

Traveling between Texas and San Francisco gave me some great views of gorgeous landscapes. On the way to San Francisco, I had clear skies for most of the way. It was downpouring when I left California and cloudy for almost the entire flight back to Houston, so I only got a couple of photos. My [...]

People in San Francisco

Since AGU is such a widely-attended conference, I got to catch up with friends I rarely see.  Below are some pictures I managed to snag of a couple of them.

Nighttime in San Francisco

We did a lot of walking around San Francisco at night, which gave me a lot of opportunities to get some long-exposure photos.  I really liked the giant bow and arrow on the edge of the water near the Bay Bridge.  Very cool!

Plants in San Francisco

Between walking around town and going to the farmers’ market, I got a bunch of pictures of plants in San Francisco.  My favorites were the orchids at the market; they had some amazing textures.  One reminded me of a humpback whale with its hairs and bumpiness!

Foggy ferry ride out of San Francisco at sunset

I was in San Francisco for the annual fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union a couple of weeks ago, so the next several sets of photos will be from that trip.  My friend Cassie and I went out on a ferry ride to Sausalito in the fog at sunset the first night we were [...]

Advance at the Armand Bayou Nature Center

A few weeks ago, my group at work had an advance (because we never retreat!) at the Armand Bayou Nature Center.  I had a few spare minutes coming back from lunch and then when leaving for the day to grab a couple of pictures.

Last night’s moon

We had a pretty strong cold front blow through starting Thanksgiving evening.  By last night, all the clouds had gone and the wind had died down, and we had a clear, crisp, calm, beautiful sky.  I shot a picture of the moon as soon as it rose above the trees.  The wind has picked up [...]

Thanksgiving dinner!

We had a fabulous Thanksgiving dinner!  I tried a new cranberry sauce recipe and it’s amazing!  It uses orange peel, freshly-squeezed juice from the orange, cinnamon stick, nutmeg, and cloves, along with the water, sugar, and cranberries.  So good!  For the turkey, I rubbed softened butter with garlic powder, rosemary, savory, and thyme under the [...]

Fall in Texas

I went to Austin a couple of weeks ago and stopped on the side of US290 on my way back to take some pictures of a farm in Chappell Hill.  It was warm with a cool wind near sunset, so I sat out on the side of the road for a bit and took a [...]

Ballunar Liftoff Festival – Nighttime

I went back to Johnson Space Center to watch the hot air balloon glow in the RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff Festival.  The balloon pilots lit their burners at the same time or alternated turning the burners on and off after the sun had gone down.  It was too cool!
