Last weekend I went to Johnson Space Center before dawn to watch as hot air balloons landed on the campus grounds in the RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff Festival. There were so many balloons and it was a blast watching them float through the air.

Last weekend I went to Johnson Space Center before dawn to watch as hot air balloons landed on the campus grounds in the RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff Festival. There were so many balloons and it was a blast watching them float through the air.
[...] Flying between Texas and California provides some fantastic views of many amazing landscapes. I was lucky and had clear skies for most of the way both to California and back, and took photos for as long as I had daylight. These are a few of my favorites.
[...] I went to Pasadena, California to present a poster at the Division of Planetary Sciences (DPS) meeting earlier this month. The first few days were cold and rainy (I thought I was supposed to be able to get away from that by coming to CA!) but the second half of the trip had gorgeous weather. [...] One of the great things about living in Houston is having a beach so nearby. It’s especially nice in the offseason when there are fewer people, even on beautiful days.
[...] Juliane and I went down to Galveston yesterday. It was an absolutely gorgeous day at the beach. She let me take some photos of her during the sunset when the light was nice. These are a few of my favorites.

[...] My cat Kepler (named for famous astronomer Johannes Kepler, who discovered that planets move in ellipses, rather than circles – Kepler the cat has an ellipse pattern in the fur on his side.) was hanging out on the window sill and managed to hold still long enough for me to get a couple of photos. [...] We were in San Antonio a couple of weeks ago, and there were these fabulous plants with amazing curly vines and crazy fuzzy flower buds. I have no clue what they were but they were awesome!
[...] After the comet was a no-show, we decided to stick around to watch the sunrise over the Gulf. Hundreds of seagulls appeared as dawn neared, and pelicans soared overhead like the Mafia of the bird world. When the sun broke through, there was gorgeous golden light shining through the clouds.
