Total Lunar Eclipse!

There was a total lunar eclipse in December that was visible (through the clouds) in Houston!  A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth blocks the sun’s light from hitting the surface of the full Moon.  Because the orbit of the Moon is slightly inclined, it doesn’t happen every month, so it’s a special event [...]

Nighttime in San Francisco

We did a lot of walking around San Francisco at night, which gave me a lot of opportunities to get some long-exposure photos.  I really liked the giant bow and arrow on the edge of the water near the Bay Bridge.  Very cool!

Last night’s moon

We had a pretty strong cold front blow through starting Thanksgiving evening.  By last night, all the clouds had gone and the wind had died down, and we had a clear, crisp, calm, beautiful sky.  I shot a picture of the moon as soon as it rose above the trees.  The wind has picked up [...]

Ballunar Liftoff Festival – Nighttime

Galveston at 4am

We went to Galveston to try to catch a view of Comet McNaught several weeks ago. We were unsuccessful because of cloud cover and light pollution, but I did manage to get a few decent pictures while it was still dark.

Nacogdoches and Blue Lagoon

Austin State University Observatory.  We got to use the 18-inch telescope (used by NASA to [...]

Moon!

We had a rare low-humidity evening here in Houston, and I caught a decent photo of a first quarter moon!

Emily in Austin

When we were in Austin in October, I took a few pictures of Emily downtown and at the Capitol at night.

Emily’s downtown Houston nighttime portraits

After seeing Phantom of the Opera in downtown Houston, Em and I did an impromptu photo shoot by a fountain across the street from the theater.  There was some uplighting from some glass squares on the sidewalk, and then by the fountain there was a bright greenish backlight.  I used my external flash [...]
