San Francisco

In early December, I headed to San Francisco for the annual Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union. While most of my time was spent at the conference, I did find time to catch up with friends who live far away and see some of the sights of San Francisco.

I went to lunch with my roommate from my internship in 2004, Sarah. She lives in England and I only get to see her once a year at this conference

The only part of my flight from San Francisco back to Houston that wasn’t completely covered with clouds was right after taking off, so below are a few photos of California

I traveled to the Phoenix area to help facilitate a teacher workshop about the Moon last month. I stayed with a couple of awesome friends of mine from grad school (hi Beck and Thijs!) for a few days before the workshop. They have a fabulous pool that we spent the hot summer nights relaxing in, and a bunch of different cacti and succulents. These are a few of my favorites.

Summer in downtown Austin

When my friend Sam and I were in Austin, she wanted to go on a bat boat tour on the lake. We got there early to make sure to get a good seat and had some time to kill, so we wandered around on the hike and bike trail. It’s a nice trail right by the water with lots of plants and birds to watch. We saw a mama cardinal feeding a baby in the bushes!

US Botanic Garden

The US Botanic Garden is spectacular, even in winter. I got to stop by for a couple of house in February and could have spent all day looking at and taking pictures of all of the gorgeous plants. Below are some of my favorites.

Between walking around town and going to the farmers’ market, I got a bunch of pictures of plants in San Francisco. My favorites were the orchids at the market; they had some amazing textures. One reminded me of a humpback whale with its hairs and bumpiness!

Advance at the Armand Bayou Nature Center

A few weeks ago, my group at work had an advance (because we never retreat!) at the Armand Bayou Nature Center. I had a few spare minutes coming back from lunch and then when leaving for the day to grab a couple of pictures.

There was an awesome moss-draped tree near the building where we were meeting.

Phoenix Desert Botanical Gardens

We had some spare time in Arizona so we spent a few hours at the Phoenix Desert Botanical Gardens. They had a monarch butterfly exhibit, and I got some pictures of all the cactus and desert plants.

Black and whites

In my living room over my couch I have a picture wall with a dozen 8×10 pictures. Previously, they had been all in color, but we decided to get a new set of different pictures printed in black and white. They look so much better! The color ones were nice but all of them in black and white makes them seem more like a set. Below are the ones hanging on my wall, as well as two in a double frame on another wall in the living room.

And the two on the other wall. The top one is from a park in Houston. The bottom one was taken along the Colorado River in Utah. I like how the shapes mimic each other.

Mercer Botanical Gardens

Em and I went to the Mercer Botanical Gardens in Spring (northwest of Houston) a couple of weeks ago and I got some nice pictures of plants, bugs, and a lizard!
