Bat boat!

One of the things I really wanted to show Sam when I took her to Austin for the 4th of July was the bats. Austin has the largest urban population of Mexican free-tailed bats in the world; the boat tour guide said there were 800,000 bats this year! They live under the Congress Avenue bridge over Ladybird Lake downtown. They fly out in swarms at sunset during the warmer months to eat, and you can take a boat out on the lake to watch. Sam and I went on Capital Cruise‘s bat boat tour and were treated to the best show they had had all summer. Below are pictures of the skyline at sunset, a yellow-crowned night heron (that feeds on baby bats and thus hangs out around the bridge), and the bats! The video shows several swarms of bats flying out from under the bridge, over the treeline, and down the lake. It’s amazing to see, so if you’re ever in Austin during the summer, you should definitely go check out the bats!

The Oasis

A friend of mine, Sam, was in Houston from Canada for work right before the 4th of July. I took her with me when I headed to Austin for the holiday weekend. One of our stops was The Oasis, a restaurant built into the side of the limestone cliffs overlooking Lake Travis. Sam, Sara, and I had dinner and watched the sun set over the lake. It was beautiful but blazing hot!

I was in San Francisco for the annual fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union a couple of weeks ago, so the next several sets of photos will be from that trip. My friend Cassie and I went out on a ferry ride to Sausalito in the fog at sunset the first night we were there. It was a spectacular sunset; the sky looked like it was on fire. It was freezing out on the deck of the ferry but I kept having to go back out there because the sunset kept getting better and better.

I went to Austin a couple of weeks ago and stopped on the side of US290 on my way back to take some pictures of a farm in Chappell Hill. It was warm with a cool wind near sunset, so I sat out on the side of the road for a bit and took a short video of the grasses moving in the breeze.

Pasadena, California

I went to Pasadena, California to present a poster at the Division of Planetary Sciences (DPS) meeting earlier this month. The first few days were cold and rainy (I thought I was supposed to be able to get away from that by coming to CA!) but the second half of the trip had gorgeous weather. I had the most amazing view of City Hall from my hotel room, and since my body refused to get off of Central time, I was up to see the sunrise every day. It was a crazy trip, and it just about killed the geologist in me to have so many rocks and mountains nearby with no time to go explore!

On my last night, I went with a friend from grad school to the Colorado Street Bridge.

Walking back to the hotel, there was a fabulous walkway with arches all along one side (iPhone photo).

One of the great things about living in Houston is having a beach so nearby. It’s especially nice in the offseason when there are fewer people, even on beautiful days.

It seems that every time we go down to Galveston, there’s a nice sunset. These are from a few weeks ago. Most were taken with my Canon, but I took the triptych of gulls with my iPhone.
